The Juneau Nordic Ski Club (JNSC) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization run almost entirely by dedicated volunteers. The mission of the JNSC is to enhance, develop and promote Nordic skiing in Juneau. JNSC puts more people on skis more often on more kilometers through youth development, trail development and trail maintenance in the Juneau area.
Through various land management agreements, the JNSC grooms trails on public lands during winter in multiple locations around Juneau. The JNSC regularly grooms Montana Creek Road, the Mendenhall Campground and Lake (when ice and snow conditions are safe). Additional ‘pop up’ locations are established when snow cover allows, such as Pioneer Road, Amalga Meadows, and Salmon Creek road. Additionally, through agreements with the CBJ Eaglecrest Ski Area, JNSC periodically grooms Eaglecrest trails in the early and late season and under low snow conditions to extend the season. All grooming takes place using JNSC operated snow machines and grooming attachments, operated by the volunteer groomer corps and is snow cover dependent.

In 2018 there were over 4300 winter visits to Green Canyon! If you enjoy the trails, please join or make a donation. We receive no funding from the Forest Service for grooming. Each time we groom it costs approximately $100 in fuel, maintenance, snowmobile expenses and volunteer time.
The next time you see a groomer on the trail, thank them for all the hard work! You can contact the NU Grooming Coordinator if you want to volunteer or have grooming suggestions.
There are also ungroomed trails in the valley and the mountains that you can tour on classic cross country skis

The trail system at Brookhaven has been 25 years in the making. A passion for downhill skiing brought us to Alpine Meadows Road and the wonderful community ski mountain there. When the area closed in 1993 I focused my energy on creating a cross country ski trail network. In the years since, trails have been added and removed and recently have grown to take advantage of the Town of Greenfield’s Brookhaven Park and can now boast nearly 9 miles of groomed ski and snowshoe trails as well as a full service restaurant on the weekends.

We groom ski trails at Government Peak Recreation Area, the Moose Range, Archangel Road, and Independence Mine. We host community ski races, and more competitive races; as well as the annual Mat-Su Ski for Women. We offer educational clinics and adult ski lessons. Hundreds of kids are learning to ski every winter in our Junior Nordic program. We organize and lead community ski get-togethers and an annual overnight ski trip to a remote hut or cabin. We work with other ski organizations, such as local high schools, when they race at the venues we maintain. The Club has and can host FIS-sanctioned Nordic races at GPRA. We host the annual Government Peak Hill Climb, a component of the summertime Alaska Mountain Runners race calendar. We organize volunteers, raise funds, do trail work, pursue grants, manage projects, and work with public and private agencies and organizations to build new ski trails and facilities, and to maintain the trails year-round.

Dog Creek maintains over 27 kilometers of groomed nordic trails during the winter season, usually mid December through March 31. Our nordic trail system is unique in that it exists both on our own private land as well as on Stillwater State Forest land. Stillwater State Forest is part of the Montana Department of Natural Resources (DNRC). The DNRC holds all of its land in a trust which generates revenue for the Montana public school system. A portion of every trail pass we sell goes directly to Montana public schools.
All of our trails at Dog Creek are dog friendly. All dog owners must sign a waiver and review our policies at the ski shop before taking your dogs onto the trail systems
