Five Fields Farm
Posted In:

Cross-country skiing has been part of Five Fields Farm for a decade. Our apple operation is smaller now and we are able to share our location with others in the winter season. An elevation of 850 feet helps put us on the right side of the "snow line". There are no guarantees, but when it snows in the foothills of the White Mountains, we usually have to shovel it.

Parking is where we formerly loaded trucks of fruit. Prepare for your outing or warm up in our winterized retail stand. We have rental equipment in all sizes including snowshoes. The trail system starts on our back lawn. Looping around the orchards, it connects with the logging roads between them. Links have been established with lands owned by abutters including the Loon Echo Land Trust on Bald Pate Mountain. While groomed trails do not extend to the summit snowshoe hikers and more adventuresome skiers regularly make the 20 minute back-country trek for a view to the horizon including numerous ponds and lakes.

Our vision: High quality Nordic Skiing for everyone in the LA community.

Our mission: The Auburn Nordic Ski Association (ANSA) promotes learning and enjoyment of Nordic skiing and related outdoor winter recreation by maintaining expertly groomed trails that support fitness, family and community enjoyment, skiing education, and coaching at all levels from toddlers to adult.

Our activities: We maintain both groomed Nordic ski trails and snow shoe trails. We support the Auburn Middle School and Edward Little High School Nordic teams and the Bill Koch Youth Ski League. We host some fun local events and occasional races. And, of course, we ski every chance we get.

Lessons and rentals - ANSA doesn't offer lessons, but Nordic skiing is something that one can pick up fairly easily.

The closest rentals are at Carters in Oxford, or Pineland Farms in New Gloucester. Pineland offers group and private lessons. Akers Ski in Andover, Boulder Nordic in Portland, LLBean in Freeport, and Northern Lights in Farmington sell equipment. Snowshoeing doesn't require lessons - you just walk! We have trails that go from our parking area through the woods, although in truth the beauty of snowshoes is that you can go anywhere.
